Hi all,

I am a new diesel owner. I just purchased a 2004 Dodge 3500 with 212k miles.
I am having trouble with excessive black smoke at all times. The injectors were all replaced,and I was able to talk to the mechanic who did the work to confirm they were new replacements. I took it to the dealer and had a reflash done back to stock specs. Still black smoke. I dont have a boost gauge installed to check pressures yet. There seems to be good power and no missing just lots of smoke. The air cleaner is new. I have not done a boost leak check, just inspected all conentions and all look good. You can here the turbo spool up so I assume its is working. Any suggestions? Thanks

Forgot to mention that the temp gauge stays down close to the peg and will not come to operating temp. Dont know if it is a bad gauge, stuck or no thermostat, or faulty sending unit.

Temp gauge issue needs to be addressed. Maybe a hint to another issue (electrical). Check for boost leaks by pressurizing, not just looking. Physically check turbo condition. Have a "reputable" mechanic / shop scan the computer. Not Auto Zone or the parts changer at the stealership. Your looking for more than codes. I'm curious what the boost sensor is "seeing".

 

Thanks for the reply. I had the dealer and another run a scan on it. I took it back to the place I bought it and they are sending it back to the shop. Will post what they find. Any others?

I would also check for intercooler boot leaks. Too much fuel + not enough air = Black smoke.
