I grew up driving my dad's fords pulling stock trailers and hey. But now it's time to get my own truck for these purposes . I am picking up an 05 dually with the six speed manual and long box. What are your opinions on this year and model. What kind of things should I check before I finalize the purchase. And what are some tips for preventative maintenence on this model of truck as far as what filter and oil combinations to run and fuel filters. Also how long will this transmission go before needing to be rebuilt or replaced.

Injectors can be an issue with these trucks, expensive to replace.
I would run lowest micro fuel filter you can find.
If it is a 4x4 check front end real good.

blowby is one that comes to mind ive heard if you unscrew the oil fill cap and just let it sit over the hole while the pickup is running and just watch to make sure it doesn't move that's what my buddy told me to try on my pickup after he replaced the engine in his 05 because he had an injector stay open and wash out the cylinder wall

Find out when the valve lash was last adjusted, or if theyve ever been adjusted. See if you can pull the intake hose to the turbo and check impeller for excessive play, and gook & grime on the impeller. This should give an indication of how well it was maintained. As for possible maintenance records. By all means take it for a decent test drive and check gauges ie: proper voltage, coolant temp, etc. Make sure its quiet inside (no radio or a/c on) while you test drive it so you can pick up on any unusual noises. But do test radio and a/c. Look for obvious oil leaks, even @ the shocks. Ya may have to get under the rig to inspect the undercarriage. Above all else, be thorough so ya dont get screwed. Good Luck!
