Common rail advice
#21
Well he asked about the common rail not the transmission, but in any case, I think they are a perfectly good tranny. People are just uneducated about maintaince of them. When you have your fluid changes along with the filter you must adjust the bands. Mine has 249K and no issues besides a loose ground of the pcm.
This is a common rail post and I know not everyone grabs some power adders right out of the box.
These transmissions are perfectly suited for the power they came from the factory with and the factory recommended tow rating. With regular fluid and filter exchange these units will last as long as the engine a million + miles.
it's the power adders that kill them and it doesn't take much to start eating them up. So no matter what common rail you choose wether it be the 5.9 or 6.7 keep them relatively stock and you'll have a power train that will last.
The 5.9 03-07.5 do not have an egr system but the 6.7 does. You can delete the EGR through 2012 with some parts and tuning as long as you aren't in CA. I've heard a rumor that you will not be able to do the delete at all on the 2013/14 6.7 and they will be running DEF (diesel exhaust fluid)... supposedly you'll get a bit more power and fuel economy.

Crazyrocks you are right but if you dont plan on doing high horsepower mods they will be ok.
Now as for delete kits for the def systems, the def system is used so the DPF can get a lil bit of a break from filling up with soot, and help with fuel mileage, but all these emissions crap it just as bad for the engine as dumping sand into the intake. Since EPA just hammerd all the companies out there that make delete kits were all kinda screwed. The gov is taking all the fun stuff away or Diesels and Guns. Just stick with the good ole 5.9 cummins.
