No non of the 5.9L have any kind of egr unless they are california compliant. The 6.7L use a common rail fuel system also. Its just a bigger engine, and they do have an EGR system on them which takes exhaust routes it thru a cooler and back into the intake which is "Fine and Dandy for your engine"-EPA. Acerts have a ARD system which they use to burn the **** out of the DPF filters. They always seem to fail during regens.

The way a common rail works,
Is you need good clean fuel, which is pumped to a High pressure fuel pump, that pump sends fuel to a single rail.(All six injector lines are feed from the same rail.) That rail which is feed by the high pressure fuel pump generates up to 30,000 PSI of fuel pressure and unlike old mechanical injection pumps in the older cummins. The injectors are fired by a 120 volt electrical system which is set off by the ecm. The common rail systems utilize a double pulse injection which is why they run so quite. The dampen the knock made by diesels. Ford, Dodge and Chevy now all use Common Rail Fuel systems. So their is your common rail fundamentals. as for the big rig industry Cummins finally came out with the Cummins ISL which is a common rail no more ISX!!!! YAY...

i don't know, they are changing the big rig cummins motors quite a bit lately.
I really hate the honken large fuel filter on the newer cummins.
I don't know what the designers are smoken when they design the motors

Ill take the big *** fuel filter(Even though I cant put it back in without spilling diesel on me) over them trying to beat mecedes benz in making the MOST complicated fuel system.. Im still not 100% sure how ISX works . But they sound like they are always missing .

Default I've got an 07 if you're interested

2007 Dodge Ram 2500 MegaCab
With a 5.9L Cummins
118,000 miles
6” lift with 20x12” Black Monster XD's with LT325/60R20 Hankook DynaPro's

Interior-
- Custom two tone, light and dark grey leather interior (brand new!)
- SoundStream in dash dvd/mp3/bluetooth/cd player with navigation and 7 speaker infinity system with 2 10” Kicker CVR subwoofers and Rockford Fosgate R1200-1d.
- Steering column mounted Cobalt boost (0 to 100psi) and fuel rail pressure gauge. (Remaining gauges through Edge Monitor, Up to 8 on monitor including EGT, Transmission gear select and Lock up, corrected MPH, Engine Coolant Temp... ect)

Engine-
-Edge CTS Juice with Attitude (hot unlocked rarely used)
-flex-a-lite fans (stock still available if requested)
-AirDog 150 (filters changed every 5,000 miles current have 1200 miles on them)
-Industrial Injection CP3 33% over (also have stock CP3 76,000 miles when removed and a remanufactured CP3 with Industrial Injection's bag of parts (10,000 miles on it)
-JUST INCASE YOU MISSED THAT … 3 WORKING CP3'S (dual CP3 kit already sold).
-Fuel rail race plug
-125 HP injectors, checked, and assembled by Industrial Injection
-Industrial Injection Silver 64 turbo (50 PSI waste gate)
-ARP 625 Head studs
-custom built transmission rated to over 800+ horsepower (redline clutches, kolene steels, carbon fiber 1 piece 2nd gear band, sonnax billet 2nd gear Super Servo Assembly, billet band strut and anchor, billet input and intermediate shafts. 130 psi gov solenoid, stage 3 shift kit, triple disk converter, output shaft is stock because it is easiest to change, build as the weak point on purpose, $800 opposed to $6,000+ you do the math.
-BD intercooler
-Industrial Injection performance cam
-MBRP 5" downpipe back exhaust
-I've only run full synthetic Schaeffers engine and transmission oil since purchase (engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles, transmission only has 26,000 since full rebuild (transmission fluids changed twice)

I'm sure I'm missing a few odds and ends so ask any questions you have.
I really hate to sell it and the only thing worse than seeing it go, is seeing it go to a dealer to be shipped off to someone that won't appreciate it. If there was any way I could manage to keep and use it I would in an instant! So here is the remainder of my plans for her.

My next steps were EFI live tuning, Snow performance stage 3, valve springs, either an 86mm(big brother) or 91mm turbo, larger dual CP3 set up, and an ATS 5 star torque converter.
No one would ever expect it to have so much go in such a big package and there wouldn't be much, if anything, street legal that could touch her.

[QUOTE=minncountryboy;1007754]Actually I believe the 04.5+ have an internal egr.. via cam shaft. It opens the exhaust vavles to a certain depth so not all the exhaust exits which in return double burns...

I meant to explain this, most engines perform what is called Valve Overlap (AKA Scavenging). Where the intake and exhaust valves are both open so the cool intake air can draw out the exhaust and help cool the exhaust valve.

Ahh I was just always told it has internal egr and three injection events and to change these you gotta put in a new cam.. which in return will give a decent amount of power gains...

I'm not really sure why no one has mentioned a transmission.... You're going to need to upgrade your transmission pretty early on unless you don't mind dealing with the loss of power and fuel economy a slipping tranny causes. 47 and 48re especially (5.9 transmissions)..

Well he asked about the common rail not the transmission, but in any case, I think they are a perfectly good tranny. People are just uneducated about maintaince of them. When you have your fluid changes along with the filter you must adjust the bands. Mine has 249K and no issues besides a loose ground of the pcm.
