Default NV4500 5th gear nut fix?

trany is about to be taken apart for clutch upgrade and input shaft, should i get the $30 5th gear retainer nut fix and do it right or can i get by with welding the existing retainer onto the output shaft?

I am on my phone but go to the cummins tech article threads and search for the welding 5th gear nut for some good info to help you decide. I wouldn't hesitate a second for the tack weld job

I bought the retainer nut kit, torqued it to specs. still came loose. tack weld it and be done with it.

Ok, What I should have said was put a few tacks around it. highly unlikely to break more than one good tack welds.
