I've seen just the seals for sale, but not sure of how tough of a job it is, since I've never done it.

You need a puller for the pitnam arm,I've changed 2 of these on older gassers I owned in the past. Is the pitnam shaft tight in the housing? If it has the side to side play these boxes are noted for,or the exsessive worm gear sector gear play you should change the stearing box,but if those issues are't there, I used a small drill to CAREFULLY!!! drill 3 holes in the seal in a triangle pattern then CAREFULLY!!! put in sheetmetal screws & pulled the seal out,Donn't go to deep drilling or with the screws, the bearing/bushing is there.I think I had aluminum pipe I used to drive the new seal in.

Ive replaced the steering box on a 97 2500 5.9. it wouldve been easier but i had a snowplow bracket in the way and hindered my ability to get around to the bolts. but it is a easy job just make sure you dont strip any rusty bolts and you should be fine.

And one more thing. Ive taken apart the gear and i could not put it back together! The auto stores around me said it would be better just to buy a new one and you get a core charge with it. That was the easiest option.
