and whatever you do, do not take off the back injector lines from the head, the pump can be removed without taking these off help save you some time in the swap

I believe that Blue24vCummins is correct. I upgraded my injectors when I replaced my VP44, so I'm not positive about this, but I don't think you necessarily have to remove the injection lines from the head to replace a VP44 IP.

I did the IP replacement back in '04, however, so I'm relying on loong term memory here.

I'm not saying he's wrong. I'm just saying that it doesn't take but about ten more minutes to take the lines all the way out and greatly reduces the amount of clutter to work around. Just a personal preference I reckon.

To do it correctly both line sets must come off

I had good luck with J Kidd @ Diesel Auto Power, bought VP-44 pump and gauge package at the same time. I would buy from him again.

when i replaced my vp i just took off lines 1,2, and 4 and left them clamped together and left lines 3,5 and 6 connected to engine so yes it can be done.

X2 The last pump I replaced I did this way also. It makes it slightly more work to finagle the pump in and out but it saves you the time of pulling the back few lines out.

Didn't say it couldn't be done, said to do it correctly. It's so easy to take the lines off, and It's much harder to damage a line. When we install vp pumps we clean the lines and that entire side of the head so we do it anyway. Clean parts make an impression on our customers . We want them to know we have gone the extra mile.

Ps a good set of stubby wrenchs and the line wrench ment for the truck make getting the back line much easier.
