I used to own a 97 powerstroke 5 speed and just bought a 02 cummins. Love the motor but yes the tranny shifts are weak and slow feeling and mine is stock with only 30K miles on it. So keep us posted as to your tranny upgrades as i will be needing some as well. But as for power i would put my 24valve up against the old stroke any day of the week, plus better milage so far anyways.

My 98 is a 12v ihave heardthat the 24v runs alot bett that the 12v. The truck is starting to grow on me. I think if the cummins was set up like my 7.3 with the 5speed and 4.10 gears it would feel more like the 7.3 and pull as well as it did.

what can i do to get more boost out of the turbo? the turbo feels like it is not producing enough boost

You need torque plate if you want more power. plug the wastegate shut, stock turbo should produce over 40psi. my 97 with #10 plate burn the clutch 1st week. Be warn your trans auto or manual will not like it one bit.
