Erratic Boost / Tranny Shutter
I have a stock automatic trans 01 cummins with a quadzilla XZT+ and a raptor 150 gph lift pump. I installed the commander gage cluster and found that my boost was only getting to about 22 psi. A buddy of mine told me to check my wastegate and we found it be stuck partially open likely causing the poor boost performance. I did not get a chance to free the wastegate yet, but would be interested in knowing if anyone has had experience doing so.....did you remove the turbo or can it be freed up w/out removing it? Anyway, a few weeks ago my boost became very erratic. jumping at constant throttle (under moderate load) from 5 to 14 psi and anywhere in between and the truck seems to be reacting to the reading because it runs very rough and shutters bad especially under low RPM, high torque situations. When it first started happening, the truck would shift back and forth when it was under high load and low rpm. I disconnected my XZT+ and had the same condition. More recently it has completely stopped shifting erratically under high load, but still shutters very bad???? It's not as bad with the XZT turned off, but it's still very noticeable and the boost fluctuates just as much. I replaced my MAP sensor and it didn't change anything. I don't have any codes up. I'm thinking that whatever my problem is, it's not mechanical, or my tranny would still be shifting back and forth like it was at the onset of the problem. I'll throw one more thing out there....I thought I had an issue with my VP44 because I could not powerbrake the truck even with the XZT+ installed. The truck would start cutting out (defueling) before it would produce enough power to spin the tires. I disconnected my chip and downloaded my buddy's Smarty Tuner...took it for a test drive and it smoked the tires w/out a problem. I contacted Quadzilla thinking it was a programmer issue and I was told that the issue was likely a torque management issue, not the actual programmer iteself and that the Smarty takes all of the torque management out of the computer. I'm hoping that this issue goes away after I get my wastegate freed up and the turbo can build full boost. I've read tons of threads and haven't found anyone having this kind of an issue. The closest thing i've seen so far was to check all of my ground wires to make sure something's not loose. Any other ideas?
The shuttering you feel is the TC going bad next time it shutters tap the brake with your left foot keeping your right on the gas if the shutter stops it the TC..mine does it to if i have my edge on and have a load so I turn off programmer when towing..you prolly notice it when on the highway pulling a load and you give it just a lil gas and it starts shaking the whole truck I know mine does
Spinning the tires not a smart thing to do unless you have the money to get a new tranny there is a possibility you make break your input shaft..I have babied my truck for almost 2 yrs trying to save up for my tranny seems like everytime i get it something happens..hope the info helps you out

I don't think it's the TC because it actually goes away under load. It only acts up when i'm anywhere from 0 to 13/14 psi of boost. once i get above 15psi of boost, it smooths out. If I'm pulling a load it doesn't do it at all unless i'm just cruising on the highway. the boost gauge is no longer erratic when i'm above 15 psi and the truck runs much smoother?? It really feels to me like it's something electronic. Also since it was doing the crazy shifting back and forth when it was on the low rpm of lock up, and then one day it just quit doing that and hasn't done it since, I think something's goofed up in a sensor or the computer.
Ok, So, I went over all of my grounds and found a few loose connections, but it did not make any difference in the truck. Then I disconnected the rod that actuates the wastegate to try and free my wastegate. It was definitely stuck, but with some light tapping I was able to move the wastegate back and forth and get it working freely by hand. I don't know how much travel i'm supposed to have but it has a lot more than it did before and it sounds like it's slapping closed now. the actuating rod doesn't seem to move at all and even trying to pry it back and forth with a screw driver, it does not move. I would think that it's supposed to move? Does anyone know? Anyway, I reattached the actuating rod back to the wastegate lever and ran the truck. the boost is a whole lot smoother and the truck no longer runs rough. Now, the only problem is that my boost won't go any higher than 15 psi. Before i did anything, i was able to get to 23 psi. So, i'm wondering if something's wrong with the actuator? I don't know what the right name is for it, but that's what I'm calling it right now. Does anyone have any experience with this and what did you do to get it working properly?
Root cause found. My boost gage was reading about 5 psi lower than the actual boost. Found out after plugging into a scanner and running the truck. It would build around 19 psi and that was it, whether the quadzilla was on or off. J hooked the wastegate and am now building 28 psi. The reason i lost boost was because my wastegate was stuck shut, and after freeing it up, the actuator opened like it should have at 19/20 psi. Since my boost gage was off 5 psi, i was only reading 14 psi. Put a different style connection on the tap to my MAP senser (boost gage connection) and am now reading a more accurate boost. Why quadzilla didn't tell me I needed a J hook on my wastegate to get more boost, i'm not sure!
