Looking at a 2002
I'm going to be looking at a 02 5.9 in the next couple of days. The truck has only 45k original miles,4x4, auto trans. What are some of the things to look for with these trucks ? How are these 5.9's for longevity and power as I'm currently driving a 7.3 ?
first off, being a victim i'd check the fuel pressure i have an 02 with 55k and im in the process of replacing my vp44. so def. check fuel pressure first off for any signs of a bad lp. others will chime in with more.
Check fuel pressure
Check the puke bottle thing its a breather directly on the front of the engine. Make sure it hasnt covered your radiator, fan shroud, ect. It will make it run hotter, plus its a mess!
Check how the transmission shifts manually shift it then let it shift on its own.
Once you get it your going to want a quality lift pump. Raptor, Airdog, Fass, etc. Dont get a fueling box til you get one of these or its goin to cost you over 1k to fix it.

Check the front end..Ball joints upper and lower, tie rod ends, trac bar, control arms, steering shaft.Check for any leaks...between the power steering pump and vac pump on the drivers side.
As for longevity they will last a long time if taken care of.
You can good power out of the 5.9 all depends on what you want to do.

What's roughly the cost of this modification ?
You would be looking around $1500 for a new vp44 and for a fass/airdog type lift pump set up. If the fuel pressure is still good then you should be ok but would suggest getting a fass or airdog pump for it and those run around $500. Based on the mileage i would be that most everything on the truck is going to be ok on it would just pay attention to the fuel pressure on it. Good luck
And to add as the others have said you will get alot of milage out of the 24v just do good regular maintenance and she will go for awhile.

A raptor 150 which is more then enough for even a 600hp truck is about $400. Comes with everything you need to hook it up.
