if i went with shut off and bypass, where would all that pressure return to
You would have to dump it back to tank. Having a solenoid and fittings to handle the pressure may be interesting to find. Sounds like custom bent fuel lines to me.

How are you going to do it on one cylinder? On the big rigs you select either the back 3, front 3, or all cylinders for the jake brake with a switch.

Actually you choose between 1,2, or all 3 heads (on N14 and older), newer ones it's 2,4 or all 6 cylinders

I have actually been throwing this around for a while, there has to be an application that used a 24V head with jakes, I think I will call my contacts at Cummins in the morning, a head swap and such would be much easier than reverse engineering this system.[/QUOTE]

Did you ever contact your contact about this?

the smallest engine that cummins offers with a jake brakes is the isc it is a 8.3L engine and i dont know if the head in the same but i would be a good thimg to look in to also if i rebemer rite from wyotech the intake next to it has a oil pressure is over the intake vavle over the push rod side of the rocker when the jake is turned on a seinode holds the engine oil presure in and when the intake starts to open the presure increases and then will open the exhuast vavle is then opened but on vavle will not give u the sound like a rig does if you only turn on 2 jakes on a rig it sound goffy so if you want the full sound you will need all 6 jakes working hop ethis is help full good luck

they make a system for the 24v's thats pre-turbo that hydrualicly closes off the exhuast with a valve and i think it comes with a programer of sorts that will tell your engine to stop the injection sequence. it runs about 6 to 800 bucks on ebay ro a custom shop would do it for just under 1800 i think. might wanna look into that instead of risking doin somthin wrong trying to conkoct a way to rig one up and snap the cam or worse...

Default jake brakes

I was wonder if they made them for the 5.9 and according to what i have found over the internet and a cummins only forum that a company named Jacobs makes them for the 5.9 and 6.7 cummins engines and said to run about $1300 installed with a 3 to 5 year warrenty

To help out a little in your quest you need to understand some princables of a jake
1) the exaust valve needs to be timed at the moment of injection or just before
2)you do not want to stop your injection of fuel, if timed properly it will not ignite and will provide upper cylender luberication.
3) on big trucks they all use a sieres of pistons and selenoids. The cummins nt855 had a mecanical injector that is opperated by a 3rd lobe on the cam. On a cat motor they use a intake valve that is timed close to were it needs to be to operate the pump piston. All systems use engine oil and the selenoid traps it in the circut to allow the pump piston to opperate the servo piston.
4) next there is a switch mounted on the throttle so it will only kick on at idle and a clutch and neutral switch to shut it off so it wont stall the engine. This could be a problem on full electronic engines and auto transmissions but im sure a good programer could rewrite your ecm and make it work with an add on module.

The only way I can see to make it work right is to machine a jake box to fit the head and buy parts from a production jake ( piston, selenoids, etc.) and make a one of a kind.
The other problem is unless you have a hell of a load or have it working on 1 cylenderI think the breaking horse power will make it damn near uncontrolable hence why jacobs never produced one.
If you want some good info go to Jacobs website and start downloading pdf manuals for the various models.
Its a dream of mine too just need a couple spare heads to play with
