2000 was the last year for the Crank position sensor. Usually if your tach quits, in your case it would be the crank position sensor that is bad as the PCM uses that to calculate fuel flow etc...

Can you youtube a video of it cranking over?
Did you get it scanned for codes ?
MAYBE .. i don't know why, but try resetting your APPS ?!
Disconnect your batteries over a 4-6 hour period, Leave the key in the on postion
turn key off
hook batteries back up(make sure they're charged up after all that cranking )
turn key on
slowly push pedal to floor
slowly let pedal up
turn key off
Try to start ! See if you can't get that code reader from someone local before you disconnect the batteries, Check for codes before and after !
I'm almost thinkin VP pump aswell, but there's no way i'd spend that kind of money with out being damn sure !
