I had the same problem but on the 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th. Rebuild cost me 1600 bucks, and that was with me pulling and installing that 300 pound beast. Now I take better care of that than the motor. I agree try a fluid change first.

Also beware if you get it rebuilt, the parts are hard to find, and they wanna stick cheap china stuff in there. Make you sure double check the parts going in.

Well if it comes down to it, has anybody ever used a Jasper? I know they used to not have too good a reputation but in the last ten years or so I hear they've really come around.

So can somebody tell me what exactly a synchro is? Cuz some of ya'll metioned your synchro lettin the transmission grind between 1 and 2 or 3 and 4, I get that. But why would there be one between 6th and Reverse? Because I would think there'd be one between 5th and 6th, that would make sense.

Synchro is short for synchronizer, and each gear in a 5600 has one. There are some different kinds of sychros out there but they all are supposed to stop grinding when going into gear. The most common kind are brass and have arrow-shaped teeth that help slide the gears together when you select them. The brass is obviously softer than the steel gears, so they will wear out over time. I think a fluid change will do you worlds of good though. Put an extra pint in it over what the book calls for, it helps when idling on flat ground, there are some bearings that can possibly get starved for oil in that situation.

we had a 5 spd jasper dumped in a 99 v10 and it ran for a couple hundred thou before it was sold. i am sure it was a little pricey to put in. but the garage we use, thats all they sell, and install. i am sure a couple of our other trucks had some in, but i never check them out. i just get in and go most days, to much to do,then worry about the truck.

also i had a crappy clutch in my old truck, in first and reverse, i had to let the clutch out a little before it would fall in. not all the time, but soemtimes.
