I like the way the G56 shifted.
I would trade my auto for a G56. Anyone know if it bolts up to a 2nd Gen engine?

Granted, I do not have a CTD, I have a D-maxer, but I have a 6spd, with a South Bend ceramic DD and I love it, I am currently buying an '02 with a 5spd auto, who want to take bets as to whether I wind up upgrading the tranny in it???

A G56 should bolt up to a 2nd gen engine. I think there was a thread over on the TDR where someone did just that. IIRC he had to custom make a crossmember. Also the G56 has a high final drive ratio. I don't remember exactly what it is but the important thing to remember is your truck will effectively have 4.10 gears after the swap. If you already have 4.10's ... good luck getting anywhere.

Mine has 3.55 now. I think the '06 I test drove had 3.73. I did notice that the RPM at 70 in 6th gear was a little higher than in my '01 Auto.

Looks like a 5 speed then!
Would love a 6speed but the prices are way high!

Thanks everyone!

ill tell you what, we have 4 cummins powered rams in my family, 2 99s, a 98 24 valve and an 89. the 98 has the 47re auto and its byfar the crappest truck of the bunch, the auto trannys suck, having driven that 98 as a daily driver for 3 yrs before getting my 99 witha 5 spd, i can say this, i will never again buy or drive an automatice truck, especiallyfor towing

The stock tranny's are good for towing with no mods to the truck.
I replaced mine with a built one before it even crapped out.

my 98 was completely stock and i changed the fluids every 3 months in the tranny just to keep it alive, im sure a built one will be much different then a stocker but im not going back, if i were drag racing, then maybe i would but for everything else, im staying with my 5 spd.
