how to wire a obd2 to a 99 cummins ecm
#2
In general - the Cummins ECM has a CANBUS ....and it also has lines that go to an OBDII 'port' to allow readers to access the engine data and fault codes. If you find and download a typical shop manual that includes wiring diagrams, you will see what lines from the ECM connect to the OBDII port.
Many people will use the OBDII port to connect something like a SCANGAUGE and provide real time display of various engine parameters, and the SCANGAUGE can also display a better estimate of MPG than the overhead reader that some trucks came with. And of course, the OBDII port is used with scanners to read faults, or to reprogram the ECM.
The CANBUS connector (near the ECM, near the fuel filter) might be used for certain programmers - like the EDGE EZ - to modify timing.
