I see all the answers... thats doh! timing that's really only useful for all out competition, common sense says "why?" For a street truck that's just stupid. Felpro? Really, you came on here to whine about a felpro gasket blowing over and over again? Try a cummins gasket. Doh! And a few post back you said the head was surfaced but you're using a standard gasket thickness? Really? This is why we got out of performance. All the DIY screw ups and messes. How bout you take your truck somewhere that knows what their doin?
Fire ring it.... I'll lmao. You pissed about blowing gaskets now, you'll have the head off of it more than you'll have it on it with fire rings. Quit reading forums and thinking youve got the required knowledge to wrench!
Wait.... this is in the vp forum. Is it a p pump truck or are you just trolling

I suggest trying a Cummins gasket as well. Every situation is different, but here is what I have been running;

Did a Cam, Valve Springs, and pulled the head to do it so I could change the gasket. Didn't measure the block, didn't get the head surfaced, just cleaned it really well. *I know some may think "are you retarded??" Well guys, been a HD diesel tech for 14 years, and there are A LOT of machines out there that have got this treatment, and have NOT had issues* I used a Cummins head gasket, ARP head studs, retorqued, I push 55 psi boost with my compounds, and there is about 20,000miles on that head gasket with no problems. Daily driver, weekend warrior with my holiday trailer and quad in tow.

Right but there is a big difference between a tech and diyer. Lol I always have em surfaced for liability reasons as far as customers go but I've got a couple of our own vehicles running heads that were not surfaced and haven't had a issue. We also know what to look at in regards to finish on the head and and warping or twisting that most diy guys miss. most diy guys wouldn't spend 200 on a straight edge either.

+2 on cummins gasket...might even want an extra thick one to reduce your compression slightly...

and fire rings?! really.... fire rings are not street friendly and tend to come apart after too many heat cycles. get a better quality gasket and back that timing off.

might also want to put a gate on that turbo depending on how much fuel you are running to it...

drive pressures will kill a head gasket just as fast as timing will.

btw: I'm running 10* over stock and backing it down in increments to stock as rpm's go up (gotta love vp44 dynamic timing) as well as 68-75psi of boost. no o-rings or fire rings...stock cummins head gasket with the cheaper ARP studs. no issues in the 3+ years the twins have been in there with the head gasket...

OK sorry i didnt know much about the fire rings, the guy who owns a performance diesel shop told me to get rid of the orings and go for fire rings. I pulled the head off it tonight and head gasket was fine, so it leads me to the oil cooler which is going to come off tomorrow so I can test it. Im going to bump the timing down once I get the head back on from getting magnifluxed and pressure checked.

The truck that im talking about is my 98.5 ppumped

I feel like I read something in regards to injector pop pressure on p-pump 2nd gens effecting final timing if utilizing the factory vp injectors but im not sure which way. Dont have much experience there so couldnt tell you timing wise.
