can I pull the motor & tranny in one unit on an 01 1ton

If its a manual transmission theres probably no way ur gonna get it out with out breaking something, it is a very heavy combo! Even if its an automatic i prefer to take the tranny out before hand it makes it easier to manuever the engine!

if you took the whole front of truck off you could maybe we took a motor out front wards on i think an 06 took head lights front support etc off

Separate them. Its much safer and easier.

Most common engine hoist don't have the stability to hold that kind of weight with the trans hanging off the back. Once you did get it up in the air you take a big risk of tipping the hoist with the swing weight or breaking the boom. I rather be safe than sorry.

From my experience the issue is the weight swings off to one side and literally "twist" the hoist over. These motors a pretty sketchy on a typical hoist anyway, just trying to roll it without turning it over is a challenge .
