Fill the filter and water seperator (if you change the WS) up with fuel before placing them back on the pump. Then bump the starter but don't start and let the system prime until it stops then fire it up. No need to crack lines.

how often should i change the water separator?

so i just spin them off, let fuel pour into new ones, then spin back on? and what do you mean by bump the starter. just turn key shortly but dont let it start?

Get some diesel into a can and fill the filters that way, and yes just bump the ingnition really fast and let go.. do not start, waterseperator should be done every time you change your filters...
