Seems like everytime i turn around my 93 4x4 rear brakes are leaking,busting,and not working.Is it possible to change the rear drums to disc brakes?And if so, how hard and how exspensive is it?And is it worth the time and money to do so?

 

Yes it is possible I did them on my 90. Need all of the following parts from a late 70's k20 I chose a '77. Pretty easy and not too pricey, I think I spent about 80 on rotors (front), about 80 on calipers (have to eat the core charge), brackets I got from great lakes off-road for 65 then pads and lines about 30 from local parts store. Also the hoses from the calipers to hard lines use a 7/16" banjo bolt to connect the hose to the caliper (dont come with calipers or hoses, so need to get seperate). So in the end about 250-275. My truck was an auto so I didnt worry about the e brake but someone did this swap on a 5 speed and used calipers off a late 70's el dorado I believe. Those calipers are equiped with a e brake. Once you have all of the parts its not that hard. Take off all of the old crap and then bolt or weld on your brackets (I had the bolt on style) NOTE: you will need spacers, that can be bought with brackets, the bracket will not bolt directly to the flange on the axle housing. In hind sight I would have rather have the welded syle just remember like the measure twice cut once rule, fit twice weld once. Pound the studs out of the hub/drum and put the rotor on the hub and pound the studs back through. Put the rotor/hub back on and slide the caliper on. Bleed and repeat on other side then you have a disc set up. If you go with the e brake style then rig your cable up to the lever(s) or make a home made setup. Couple hours on a saturday and you will be good.

I used a kit from EGR Performance Brakes, brakes for Dodge, Ford, Chevy, GMC, Tahoe, Yukon, Excursion, Dakota, Durango or whatever you drive.. Kind of spendy but it turned out well.



This one includes the parking brake using the Eldorado calipers mentioned above. Some folks are concerned about a perhaps longer pedal stroke and no allowances being made with the proportioning-valve. In my mess though, they work just fine.

 

egr kit is great buddy installed one, but bleeding those calipers what a pita hes had to do acouple of panic stops simce instalation and without the rear discs he wouldnt of made it

 

i highly reccomend swapping. i did cause my rear brake line system was cut off and abandoned for about five years. would have costed me as much as a conversion to make the drum system work! i absolutly love it. agreed with crazy clem, had a few holy sh*t times and disc's kept all my sheet metal straight!
