Print this articleThe Getrag G360 was a five-speed manual transmission for trucks. Manufactured in Germany, it was installed on 1989 to 1993 Dodge Ram 250 and 350 series trucks in the 3/4-ton and one-ton classes. Getrag 360s were designed for use behind the Cummins 5.9-liter turbocharged diesel engine.
Construction
Getrag's 360 was a heavyweight transmission with a cast iron case and an aluminum cover.
Gear Ratios
The stock gear ratios for the Getrag 360 were designed for heavy hauling and towing. For first gear through fifth gear respectively, the gear ratios are 5.53:1, 3.02:1, 1.60:1, 1.00:1 and 0.77:1.
Oil Specifications
Getrag recommended the use of 5W30 motor oil in the 360. Either a conventional or synthetic oil may be used. Oil capacity of the Getrag 360 is 3.5 quarts.
Substitutions
Getrag 360s suffered from notorious reliability issues commonly attributed to under-lubrication. In 1994, after just four years of production, Dodge replaced the Getrags in Ram trucks with the more durable New Venture NV4500. Retrofit kits to replace the OEM Getrag 360 with the NV4500 on 1989 to 1993 Dodge trucks are available

Times change. You can stay stuck in 1990 and use motor oil, no problem. The Dodge manual for my '91 says ATF for cold weather. Or you can use synchromesh and have a better-shifting longer-lasting transmission. Your choice.
