I have overhauled mine once to make a good one out of two. Its just a matter of taking the shifter out, poping some of the press in caps out and driving the roll pins out that hold the forks on the 3 shafts. There is a process to get them apart and back together though. One piece will let another come out type deal. There are also some spring loaded ball bearings that are called the detents that give it the click feeling into gear, i dont remember if they stay in the cover or not but be carefull so you dont loose any pieces.

Once the shift rods are removed the ***** go flying. Just a warning. There's no way to prevent it either, just my experience with the upper tower.
