500 horse isn't alot.... oh wait... on a VE pump thats not alot, that's un-godly. Like BEGLE said, If you dont think 500 is alot your in the wrong business bud and you wont be impressed with a VE. But seriously.... it all depends on the mileage, condition of the motor/trans etc. If you think its gona cause problems it probably will. I have over 300,000 miles on mine and I dont have it "maxed out" nor do I plan on "maxing it out". Its your choice.

Don't get us wrong, by all means turn your pump up. Just don't expect 500hp without serious amounts of time, thought, engineering, and most importantly MONEY!!!
However, it would be highly advised to invest in, at the very least, a pyrometer, if you haven't done so already. And I personally would advance my timing somewhat also. As far as hurting things, not really. Depends more on how you drive. If you floor it every time you take off, slip the clutch, (if you have one) stay on the skinny pedal for prolonged periods of time etc etc, (basically, abusing your vehicle) then even a stock truck is going to fall apart.
