Is there any negative affects to advancing the timing, like cracking pistons or anything like that?

probably the same thing as truck pullers... if youre spraying outside of the fuel bowl in the piston, and the excessive heat can harm....stuff?

nope, only way to do alot of damage is to run ALOT of timing and lug teh engine down, that will lead to craked pistons. With teh plate bringing in all teh timing higher up in teh RPM range you will be fine as long as you run a conservitave timing setting on teh actual pump.

Thanks, I'm running stock timing. My truck rarely sees over 2100 rpm and when I tow I let it pull down to around 12-1500 rpm being easy on the throttle. Is that lugging it to much? I'm still trying to get over the horror of the 7.3 I had( I still lose sleep over it to this day). Advanced timing on those means 8 pistons, 2 heads+ downtime and labor.

yeah I would say 1200 rpm under load is lugging.

Do you have an EGT gauge yet? How about boost? Id be willing to bet you see lower EGTs turning 2000-2500rpm under WOT then 1200rpm

Well when towing a light trailer 4-6k I only see about 1050 max and about 7-10psi driving conservatively. Towing heavy, well unless there's no wind or I have a tailwind,it's 4th gear 2100rpm 1250f , 15-25 psi and its very hard to keep it under 1250f. And play i never see over 1150f and 27psi max.

Also the faster the engine turns the higher egt's get. The only way to stay cool is to keep it between 15-2100rpm.

Maybe, when I get my VGT installed it will build slightly more boost if I close the gate more but I'm not certain it will flow more CFM ...That's a try and see...
it might, couldn't say for sure because every truck is different.
