The problem with using a standard relay is that a standard relay is spec'ed to around 30 amps; the grid heaters are more than that. 50 amps a piece, right? You'd probably get a voltage drop across the relay just because it's not big enough.
ON THOSE EXTERNAL VOLTAGE REGS IF YOU DONT USE THE PROPER, OR GOOD TERMINALS AND YOU GET A LOOSE CONNECTION THE CUTTING IN AN OUT ON THE FIELD WIRE WILL BURN OUT THOSE CRAPPY NAPA ONES ...I GUESS HIGH RESISTANCE FROM A ARCING TERMINAL WILL DO IT IN....ANOTHER POST SUGGESTED GETTING A TERMINAL FROM THE HEAD LIGHT HARNESS PLUG FROM ANTHER TYPE OF TRUCK......I JUST SOLDERED MINE ON THE BENCH WITH SOME # 12 WIRE AND THIS ONE HAS LASTED ABOUT A YEAR
Also you can try rebuilding yours....

IF YOU GOT AN ELECTRICAL PARTS STORE NEARBY TRY AN ALLEN BRADLEY SOLID STATE RELAY 50 AMP WITH A 3~ 32 V COIL SINGLE POLE PART# 700-SH50GZ24 THEY ARE VERY COMPACT AND DURABLE THEY ARE LIKE 25-30$ OR CHECK EBAY
