Love the truck hate the charging system. Need some help!

Thanks for the help Arizona redneck. I have a problem with my 1991 dodge pu. It is hard on voltage regs. I've put 2or3 on it usually last 8mounths to a year so not to suprized when it quit charging the other day. This time I put a new one on and nothing should I suspect bad reg right out of the box. Also I noticed one of my heater relays top post slightly melting plastic case. Could this cause reg failure? And how do I fix it. Heater relays are a discontinued part can't find them enywhere. By the way why is there so manny problems with voltage regs in these trucks? :argh:

alot of times its the computer thats bad and not the voltage regulator. try putting a new regulator on, if it doesnt fix it, its probably your computer. i dont believe the voltage regulator would cause the heater tops to melt at all but i could be wrong. if you do a search for charging problems on these you will find a ton of answers. hope that helps :tu:

But why is the top of the heater relay melting? And does anyone know where to buy new relays.

ive never been able to find one. thats why i save them when i part them out. i just had one of mine go bad not too long ago. good thing i had an extra one stashed.

i would try finding someone parting out one somewhere (theres a guy parting one in classified here) or calling your local dismantler

ive also seen them on ebay constantly as well

Sounds like you might have an extra one tltruckparts. Want to sell it? + does anyone know what would cause mine to melt?

tltruckparts 03-13-2010 08:45 PM

i only got one left and im saving it in case one of mine goes bad. only thing that could cause it to melt is if the positive grounded itself out and heated up but that would probably either smoke like crazy or start a fire. or its sending too much voltage and heating itself up. or maybe something on your fender well gets hot maybe?

I seen a thread on how to disassemble the relay and clean the contacts. I was wandering if dirty contacts would arc and cause the case to melt. + nobody has answered why all the bad regulators. The manufacturer's must be going broke.

you can try cleaning them that could be a start. these regulators are notorious for going bad. thats one thing that dodge never did right with this whole externally regulated thing IMO

Are you using a good quality regulator. About the only ones that live are the Blue MOPAR Voltage-Regulator part number is P3690731.
