Actually, they're pretty darn accurate. The trick is to understand the factors that influence that reading WRT the tuning and fueling issues in your your specific engine like you went on to describe, Begle.

Now when you gonna get a real GF and stop hatin' on the femmes?

FWIW; Cummins rates the earlier (1st gen) 12v CTDs: 100% duty cycle at 1200*F (preturbo) EGTs. 1250*F for the newer 12v.

My '90 factory service manual states "1300 degrees" as maximum exhaust gas temperature. I've held mine right at 1200 for hours on end.

i'v held mine at 1300* for quite a wile while towing my F-150 up to rausch creek to go fourwheeling..... it's a long uphill. with lots of sharp turns.
