vacuum 4x4 motor

Ill bet he has a dana 44,look where it sez "my diesel"on the upper right. It say's "85 Ram Prospector"! The 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks used a vacuum disconect I believe from 85 on, my 84 Ramcharger has auto hubs. You could get a housing out of any 80-84 pu or rc,I think the 74 to 79 housing will work also. 1/2 and 3/4 ton housings are the same. You will also need the passenger side axle shaft. Or just swap in a dana 60 THAT'S what I'd do.

that seems like a ton of work compared to just locking the collar somehow.Unless i could just get the driverside axel shaft.

you should be able too, going off the idea you have a dana 44 upfront, you may be able to use a solid shaft out of a 70's ford d44 , but i donno for sure...... or you could dust ditch the 44 for a dana 60

i mean by "space" is there is no vaccume moter to keep the shift coller in place so something needs to take up the space on the shaft the shift fork rides on. cheapest rout so you have 4x4
