84 and older housings DO NOT have the vacuum disconnect!!OK most gas Dodge 3/4 ton trucks come with the 3500lb axle(D44) and 89-93 Dodge diesels 3/4 and 1ton have the4500lb axle(D60).

that seems like a ton of work compared to just locking the collar somehow.Unless i could just get the driverside axel shaft.

you should be able too, going off the idea you have a dana 44 upfront, you may be able to use a solid shaft out of a 70's ford d44 , but i donno for sure...... or you could dust ditch the 44 for a dana 60

i mean by "space" is there is no vaccume moter to keep the shift coller in place so something needs to take up the space on the shaft the shift fork rides on. cheapest rout so you have 4x4

The 2 piece axle and the housing are weaker than the older 1 piece axle and housing.I don't think that you can put the solid shaft in your housing.

I think im just gonna "lock" the shaft together with the vacuum motor.I could easily tack the fork to something.

yea i'm pretty sure all first gen diesels have lock in hubs, now the gassers don't, most 3/4 gassers have automatic vacum engage 4x4

the shift fork is alluminum, what you gonna tack it too?? do the waher thing i said it will work fiine

if it is set up like a jeep..... the shift fork rides on a shaft.... fill the space on the shaft with washers so the coller stays locked in....you mmay need to put washers on both sides of the shift fork so it stays in place....
