Purchased my first real diesel
Trying to get good advice on my 1990 Dodge 1ton dully, with auto trans. I got this truck to pull my 9000 pound travel trailer, and horses. I LOVE the older cars and trucks. What can I do to this first gen to make it a good pulling truck. I'm going to put stacks, and a cowboy sleeper on it. I'm not a penny pencher and I'm willing to put money in to this truck to keep it for a long time.

Congratulations on your new truck, There is alot of info on this site on 12 valvers. Cant go wrong with a Cummins. First make sure you have a boost and EGT gauge before you go pullin. Some of the 12 valve guys can give you more advise than me on upgrades. The sponsors on this site are real good about giving price quotes as needed just post a thread under "price quote requested.

You might start seeing the torque converter slip on that auto trans towing a trailer. The TC's are a known weak link on these trucks. The trans itself is pretty solid from what I've heard (never owned one myself). Also you might want to look into info on the killer dowel pin. There are plenty of threads on here I think. If it falls out it can kill the motor and leave you on the roadside. Other than preventative things I've mentioned, maybe a better turbo like a s300 or HX40, better intake and exhaust (4" turbo back), and mess with the VE fuel pump (free horsepower). Thats all I can think of for now. Hope this helps.
