47RE trans not going into fourth gear NEED HELP
I have a 1990 dodge ram d-350 it has the 47RE trans in it, truck has 95,000 miles, the trans has not gone into fourth gear since i bought the truck. i am not familiar with this trans, is it supposed to have a overdrive switch inside the cab? if so my truck does not have one, i found the plug under the dash for it but it is not plugged in. or is it just a regular 4 speed no overdrive? ways to try to make it go into fourth gear? need help please?!

If you are confident that the transmission in your 1990 truck is original, then you actually have an A727 3-speed transmission. NO overdrive on it.
The 46RH (AKA: A518) was used starting somewhere in mid 1991 with the introduction of the intercooled engine. It is a 3-speed with overdrive.
That transmission you mention, "47RE" is an electronically controlled transmission. The stock/OEM ECM of our trucks doesn't have the guts to control the 47RE.

i honestly dont know im trying to figure it out. i called the dodge dealer, they say 47RE, look up the carfax, 47RE, look under the dash, overdrive switch PLUG is there, bought the truck and where the switch is supposed to go somebody put a fog light switch, so i dont know if there was an O/D switch that was taken out or if there never was one...then i hear it might have just a regular 4 Speed no overdrive, then i hear the 3 speed...i am confused and not happy at this point i dont want to drive the truck if it has four gears and only three are being used.

I understand your frustration. But the fact remains, your 1990 Dodge/Cummins pickup does NOT have a 47RE. It plain won't fit the engine nor frame without substantial modifications, never mind the electronic control.
I would recommend you speak with different dealer.
ALL the Dodge/Cummins trucks run transmissions that are based on the A727. MANY of the parts are interchangeable among the different years. Since the A727 3-Speed, all the Dodge/Cummins transmissions are 4-speed or 3-speed with overdrive. It depends on who you ask I suppose. But technically, they're all 3-speed sections, with an overdrive section on what one would call the output-shaft of the 3-speed case otherwise.
