Upgrade the transmission first. If it's an auto you have lots of work to do, If it's a manual you will need a good clutch.

its worth it to grind out the air intake elbow that goes to the heater grid, match it to the manifold. and u can flatten the step in heater grid side down a little bit. its like a 90 degree step down, i did this and free'd up some restriction. might not be enough to notice but your mileage go up like 1-2 mpg. mine got about 17 untill i cut out my cat and muffler then i went to 23mpg. if i was running diesel i would put a new cat on. mine was just plugged up about 60%

Man it would scare me grinding down that stuff with it all on the truck, I really dont want metal shavings flying around that close to my intake, going directly into the engine

True. Now that I think about it, they sell delete kits for the grid heater so you would be able to remove it for the work.
