Get the Snap-on Timing kit! Its got everything you'll need! I'd go with 16.5 Deg on the timing !

Definatly the snap on kit, its a good deal believe it or not for only like $250. 16.5 is good, but be careful with combustion pressures being higher with the 370's.

Theres really only a couple special tools you need and the Snap On kit is a good buy. The one thing the kit does not include that is handy as hell is a extra long 3/8 extension (or you can use a couple shorter ones) and the engine barring tool w/ the swivel head. Saves alot of crawling around under the truck and one person can do it. Don't have to use any pulley bolts that way.

Keep the timing at or BELOW 16.0

Higher than that and you are leaning on your head gasket pretty hard.

If you have done studs and o-rings/firerings then go for more (19-21). Other wise I'd vote 15.5

I just go by what tends to work and isn't as likely to squeeze a gasket.

I've squeezed plenty at 16.5

My truck is timed much higher. But, then again my truck has studs and rings.

I'm not saying that he won't make power at 16.5. He will make great power there.

However, the peak cylinder pressure at low RPM due to this extra timing is too much to run on a stock headgasket truck. It will last a while. But will eventually give up.

I've seen it too many times.

I've been around a lot of modified trucks. More have lived at 15.5 than 16.5 when running a stock HG. No plug there. Just simple facts and simple math.

However. I still don't recommend over 16.0 for a stock HG truck. 15.5 is a better option.

My recomendation of 19-21 was if he had Studs and rings. If he did then 19-21 would compliment his 4.5GSK much better. Because above 3500 16.5 would be quite limiting.
