Yes there sorta is, but it is more complicated than using the tools. Depending on the pump you can set the lift by the clicks of a baring tool, I have used this to re-set a pump that kept jumping timing while we were trying to set it.

It is quite a bit easier to just buy yourself the timing kit and set it properly though.

I agree with what was said above its much easier using the timing set than finding another route

Accuracy is very important here - I know its not what you want to hear - but you NEED the proper tools to do this.

I would not do it this way but I have heard this has been done:

It was described to me that you set TDC and push in the pin, pop the gear on the P-Pump and then pull the pin and roll the motor with the alt and put the gear back on. They claim that 1/8" move of the belt in reverese rotation will advace the timing 2*.

That ia actually the most accurate way to set the timing, however most shops do not have the knowledge to do it this way.

there is also a timing gun that works off the pulse of the #1 injector line.I have never used one but I would like to.
