Default redneck way to set timeing?

i heard there was a way to set your timeing with out tools to within a 1 or 2. Any one know how to do this?

Yes there sorta is, but it is more complicated than using the tools. Depending on the pump you can set the lift by the clicks of a baring tool, I have used this to re-set a pump that kept jumping timing while we were trying to set it.

It is quite a bit easier to just buy yourself the timing kit and set it properly though.

I agree with what was said above its much easier using the timing set than finding another route

Accuracy is very important here - I know its not what you want to hear - but you NEED the proper tools to do this.

I would not do it this way but I have heard this has been done:

It was described to me that you set TDC and push in the pin, pop the gear on the P-Pump and then pull the pin and roll the motor with the alt and put the gear back on. They claim that 1/8" move of the belt in reverese rotation will advace the timing 2*.

That ia actually the most accurate way to set the timing,however most shops do not have the knowledge to do it this way.

there is also a timing gun that works off the pulse of the #1 injector line.I have never used one but I would like to.
