i got gauges coming in a few weeks so this is good to know but i was always told to take the turbo off but doing it with the truck running makes it easier

I havent done my egt gauge yet but i was told by a big diesel shop up here that the shavings don't hurt anything, if it was me doing it, id do it with the truck off and then take the shop vac to it!

In all reality the small and relatively little ammount of shavings that may drop into the exhaust probably wont hurt anything. but it is also a fairly expensive mistake to learn from if it does do some damage to the turbine wheel, just to save a little bit of work!

Put vasoline on the drill bit when your drilling, and every couple seconds clean off the bit and re apply the vasoline. do the same with the tap. see if you can find a pen magnet to suck the tiny ones out too. you shouldnt have a problem.
goodluck
