Im in trouble, I stripped the band adjusting screw 47rh
I got the truck home so I moved this thread..
So sorry to bother all, but I need some advise quick. I have a 1994 dodge 2500, 47rh tranny when I was adjusting my reverse band (inside the pan), I was using a 12 sided socket and stripped the hex head, I bought the right socket, and no go, it was too stripped. I might be able to hammer on a 6mm socket to undo the screw but can I remove the screw and replace it or will something worse happen if I take it all the way out. if not can I leave the socket on the screw head permenantly? any body know what to do? Am I screwed?
i hammed a 6mm on, i thought it was close to the 72footpounds that it needed before backing off , I didnt want to strip it any worse so I just backed it off 2...socket is still on, its on there good...buttoned it back up and now NO second gear...before I adjusted it, it was really loose. the little arm was waggling and had a 1/3 inch of play, does that sound loose to anybody?
---AutoMerged DoublePost---
holy crap !!! it says 72 inch pounds not 72 foot pounds..tomorrow morning I will pull the pan and fix that...do you think I killed the tranny? I have to pay closer attention to detail

Your rear band controls reverse and manual 1st. I don't believe loss of second gear was caused by the rear band being over tightened. Have you checked your front band? Definitely be sure to loosen that rear band. If its been like that for a while i would say you smoked that rear band. If you wasn't having trouble with reverse before you probably will now.
Anyways check that front band and torque it to the correct specs. (directly from the manual)
(1) Adjust front and rear bands as follows:
(a) Loosen locknut on each band adjusting screw
4-5 turns.
(b) Tighten both adjusting screws to 8 N·m (72
in. lbs.).
(c) Back off front band adjusting screw 1-7/8
turns.
(d) Back off rear band adjusting screw 3 turns.
(e) Hold each adjusting screw in position and
tighten locknut to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
Now as for fixing the stripped head. If i recall correctly the rear band has something similar to a rocker arm with the adjusting screw on it. The whole rocker arm has to be replaced, and i dont remember whether that can be done with the transmission in the truck or not. I think it can be, just pull the pan and replace it.
