Default 94 auto trans. PLEASE HELP. From TX

I recently got a regular cab, 94 3500 with the 5.9 and auto O/D tranny. Its been mildly warmed up with pump mods, BHAF, and straight exhaust. Starting today, there were 2 times I heard a nasty sound when coasting after letting off the gas, it sounded either like gears skipping, or maybe a shaft violent spinning around a wallowed out hole if that makes any sense. I also heard a few "klunks" 2 or 3 other times under the same conditions, but at different times. Driving home the tranny gave all the way out on me; just cruising down the highway, and all of the sudden there was just no more foward drive, so I coasted to a stop. None of the gears do anything, except when I go to put it back into park there was a bit of a grinding sound, which sounded like it was comming from the front of the tranny, but I could be wrong on that.

OK, I DOUBT IT CAN BE DIAGNOSED from that description(but I am open to ideas). But here is what I do need help with.

1- What is the transmission year and model interchange on these? Could I put a RE in place of what I think is an RH?

2- My truck is a factory 2wd, IFS truck, but I still have what looks like a transfer case behind the tranny, with what looks to be a factory shifter comming through the floor, but it only has D and N(and under the truck there is no output going to the front, like if it were from a 4wd). Whats up with that? Is that normal/factory? Even my dodge buddy had not seen anything like that before.

3- Anybody around the Dallas, TX or Texoma area have a good spare tranny to get me back on the road, or know of an affordable tranny shop in the area that will go through mine? You can post here, or you can email me at smalltownspeed@hotmail.com, or text me at 972-989-4003.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Cory

Also, my buddy noticed that transfer case looking part has a NewProcess tag on it; but he couldnt find anything about it in all of his dodge manuals. We are thinking that because it grinds when I put it in park that the output on the tranny is still spinning, leading us to believe that it could be that other "mistery box"...

It turns out that box is a NV 021, which is a really rare PTO, because in a previous life it was a repo truck. I was told that if the tranny makes that grinding sound when going from reverse to park that means the output shaft is turning, leading me to believe that the problem is in the transfer case style pto. So hopefully I can unbolt that big honkin PTO, bolt on a regular tail shaft housing, swap driveshafts, and be back in business. Ive found a used tranny and drive shft from a 95 12v that a guy localy is parting out. At least on the standard 47RH, is swapping the tailshaft a pretty straightfoward job? Or has anybody swapped a 47rh 4wd truck to just a 2wd, because that's essentially what I'll be doing.

Oh, and looking back, that grinding sound was very similar to something I've heard before; a buddy's jeep with a busted transfer case. It didn't sound like anything I've ever heard from an automatic.

Are you refering to the RH RE parts swap, using the 95 tranny in the 94(they are the same RH's, right?), the 2wd to 4wd swap, or me removing the PTO unit thats bolted to the tranny and replacing the tail shaft?
