Gen 1 vs. Gen 2

Gen 1 vs. Gen 2
Hope I am putting this in the right place. I am new to the world of diesel engines so just trying to figure some things out. I am planning on putting a 12v in my Bronco. Until I ran across this forum I was not even aware that there were two generations of the 12v. What are the differences between the two?
I would prefer whichever one was the simplest, as in I am looking for an all mechanical diesel. I know that the 12v only uses 3 wires if I've read right. Does this hold true for both versions?
Also, other than this forum, can anyone suggest some reading so that I can learn more about diesel mechanics in preparation for my project. I've worked on gassers for years, but I am new to this.
Thanks in advance.

For your build I would take a spin around here:
Diesel Talk - Dodge Ram, Ramcharger, Cummins, Jeep, Durango, Power Wagon, Trailduster, all Mopar Truck & SUV Owners. Dodgeram
The first link will show you what some of the guys had to do to get them in a Ramcharger, the other three are about the engine.
Most of the swaps I have read about are the 1st gen because you can get away with no computers and three wires.

Thanks for the link. Found a bunch of info here shortly after I posted this. I have a lot to learn about diesel engines. Many new terms I am going to have to familiarize myself with. Plates, springs, pumps, etc.
Looks like the first gen is the one to go with, seems to be zero electronics.
