Default bad lift pump?

i believe i have a bad lift pump and i want to make sure its that before i spend the money on it because my boss is buying it due to my truck being used as an equipment delivery vehicle. so before i spend his money and get the wrong part i would like some other opinions. truck started up fine in the morning like any other day and i let it idle for 10 min or so. when i left for work i got a quarter mile down the road and when i pulled onto another street the truck had no ***** and wouldnt rev up. some white smoke was coming out the exhaust and i continued down the road. once the rpms were above 1500 or so the truck ran like it should. pulled into the gas station to get a drink and once i let off the gas the truck stalled out. cranked it for a little and she fired right back up but was idling very rough. pulled out again and she died once more. started her back up with the help of the gas pedal being pushed a little bit and then i drove to work where i changed the fuel filter and after that it started for 10-15 seconds or so with a rough idle and then died and would not start. so i tried to push the primer button and it would never build pressure and after 5 pumps or so i could see it drip diesel which would lead me to believe that it is sucking in air from that area allowing it to never build pressure=no start. i had noticed a couple days before a leak on the ground every time i park the truck and it appeared to be oil but everyone knows diesel is a natural cleaner and will appear to be oil when leaking on a dirty area.

have you deleted the fuel heater yet? they suck in air from ther and generally dont leak. get a gauge on the truck to see what the lift pump is putting out before you bitethe bullet on a new pump. i would look into a messed up fuel heater first though. takes like 10 min to delete it.
