What are your thoughts on this:

1992 VW Golf, diesel, 4 dr, std, green w/ sunroof, very fuel efficient, 180k, body is in great shape, no smoking, must sell, as is $2000

Or this: 1997 VW JETTA GL. Turbo diesel, 4 dr, 5 spd, sunroof, pl, pm, new clutch, new fuel pump, new front end incls suspension, brand new tires $2,800. Needs engine repair, have all parts

Driving my truck is killing me at $4+ a gallon.

The 92 sounds like a better deal. I'd offer $1500 and go from there. On the 97, what does it mean, "Needs engine repair?"

Is that kilometers or miles? I'm never sure with you Canadians! Either way it seems ok. Try and find out if they got maint. records. The timing belt and tensioner is the biggy. Check the pump to make sure there are no leaks. I'm not sure if you guys are running ULSD, probably not. These pumps are not like the new diesel here.

Thats miles - I converted it.

Yes, everybody is running ULSD.

Thx.

BTW, any idea what an Injection pump costs? Do VW's have any fuel delivery issues?? Lift pumps etc.

It just cost me $450 to have the pump completly rebuilt and sealed with updated seals that will handle ULSD and bio-diesel (B100) and it was turned up about 10%.

VW don't have lift pumps. They didn't start using a lift pump until 04+ with the Pumpe Duce. In the fuel tank there is a little screen that I've seen get plugged up, not too often though. The Ip sucks directly from the tank. If you run them out of fuel, they are bitch to get primed. You may need to replace the glowplugs. They don't like to start without them when it's cold.

I'm the other way. The '97 will have more parts available up here and is considerably easier to fix because of that.

Timing chain, water pump, MAF, air induction system and so on...

I had an 89 Nissan Sentra with 195K on it and a 97 Ford F150 with 178K on it and a 94 Ford Explorer with 165K on it -- so the mileage should be okay, considering the rest of the car looks like its been maintained also..
