I Bought A Diesel Jetta
I picked up an 85 Jetta 4-door this weekend. 205K. I'll get some pics up soon. It was a life long Oregon car so there isn't any rust. I'm hoping it'll last me a good while.
The shifter is REALLY sloppy. I'm guessing I need new shifter bushings?? I was thinking that the first kit should do it but maybe I should get the whole set up with the last kit. Anyone have any thoughts?

Anything I need to check right away for PM or the sort? Anyone know of any safe pump mods I can do without killing the mileage?

Yup! Shifter bushings are shot. There usually a couple of bucks and they pop in. Keep an eye on the pump for leaks, they don't like the ULSD. The injection pump is VE Bosch. There is a fuel screw on the back of it. You won't get much out of it, maybe 8-10%. I would check and replace the timing belt, tensioner and waterpump if it hasn't recently been down, or there is no records of it. I'd change out the thermostat to a 180 and run you a manual switch to turn the electric cooling fan on, they don't like heat and it doesn't take much for them to start warming up.

Thanks, Tye. I think the pump is leaking already. I think I found a place over here that can do it. The PO was running primarily bio in this thing so I'm sure that lead to the leaking too. I guess I'll do a belt and all that then.
Are these interference motors?
I'm trying to get some daylight for pics. I shoulda had some before pics taken too because it took Joe and me over 1/2 hour to de-hippie the damn thing. looking good now.

P.S. Make sure you get a good manual (Bentley) and make sure the timing marks are lined up, and mark them. A bright color works best.
