I thought it double posted. I read after I posted that it was a 78. Sorry.
That said, his mileage is not too far of the mark with a new one either. We see 55 imperial MPG in the 2003 and the 2004.5 gets around 52 but it has a little more snot with the heavily dialed in programmer... wink wink, nudge, nudge.

Thats great milage - how did your VW work in the cold? (both trucks are giving me grief at the moment and its not even cold yet - thinking about getting something else for the winter)
Devon, did you catch the article on the Jetta in Diesel power?...If not, you better check it out

Shane,
The VW products (later than 2000 anyway) have always been good in the cold. Our 2003 doesn't need the block heater plugged in until the temps reach -20 and even then it will probably start without it. The problem is that the new ones can not be idled at all or you will be de-coking the intake real soon. That EGR valve is a PITA!
Yes, I did read it. I also responded to a post here about it. My dream car would be a combo Passat TDI CR with an Audio Quatro 6 spd. but I can't afford to buy either car right now so I'll have to wait and see. These cars even stock tend to have really high torque steer and that presents a few problems when you start to ramp them up like we have - it is a must for good snow and summer tires or you will pay the price.
Anyway, if either of your trucks is as big as a PITA as mine is right now with the batteries not staying charged after 5 days of sitting still then I feel your pain. I'm going out soon to tear it apart and look for a grounding problem.
