Head Gasket installation

Carefully lower the cylinder head onto the gasket using two of the outermost head bolts and washers to keep the gasket aligned with the cylinder head and to align the head with the block. with the cylinder head thus supported, loosely install the remaining head bolts and washers.
On engines with hexagon-socket socket-head cylinder head bolts-as originally installed until mid 1981- torque the head bolts to 50Nm (37ftlb) in the sequence given in fig 5-15. Go over the sequence a second time, torquing the bolts to 70 Nm (52 ftlb), then a third time, torquing the bolts to 90Nm (66ftlb).

On engines with 12 point socket-head cylinder head bolts- introduced gradually during 1981- torque the head bolts to 40Nm(30 ftlb) in the sequence given in fig 5-15. Go over the sequence a second time torquing the bolts to 60 NM(44 ftlb). Then, go over the sequence again, tightening each bolt one-half turn in one movement using a breaker bar rather than a torque wrench.

Reinstall everything using new gaskets, nuts, washers and heat shields.

Reconnect battery ground strap and start engine. Adjust idle speed to 800 to 850 rpm as described in FUEL AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS.

Warm up the engine until the oil temperature is 50*C(122*F) or above, then stop the engine.

On engines with hexagon-socket socket-head cylinder head bolts, do not loosen any bolt, but torque each bolt to 90Nm (66ftlb) following the sequence given previously.

On engines with multi-point socket-head cylinder head bolts, do NOT loosen any bolt; but, using a breaker bar, tighten each bolt by precisely one-quarter turn.

After the vehicle has been driven for approximately 1500 km (1000 miles), remove the cylinder head cover with the engine stopped.

On engines with hexagon-socket socket-head cylinder head bolts, loosen each cylinder head bolt by about 30*, and then retorque it to 90Nm (66ftlb)- regardless of whether the engine is hot or cold.

On engines with multi-point socket-head cylinder head bolts, do NOT loosen any bolt; but using a breaker bar, and regardless of whether the engine is hot or cold, tighten each bolt by precisely one-quarter turn-with no hesitation in the bolts movement.

Check valve clearances and if nec. adjust.

Install cylinder head cover.

Done

If you do a lot of work on your car you will need a triple square or 12 point bit set. For the axles you need the 8mm, the 10mm fits the starter bolts on some VW's and 12mm fits the head bolts.
Autozone, Napa, both carry these.

No neccessity of the retorquing sequence with the multi-layer headgaskets.
You copied an old manual...

Ok thanks yea its hard to find any info on these so what little i do find i try and post on here.

Part number for the bit set at autozone is 25015 made by OEM 12.99 lifetime warrenty if you go in and ask for 12 point bit set they will look at you as if you were from another planet. Napa has them for 31.99 as does sears for the 3/8 socket set of 4.
