I'm not interested in something to modify, I'd much rather have something that I don't have to ever fix or work on.

I'm thinking third gen Jetta TDI.

yeah I personally would get a passat TDI, but they're hard as hell to find and expensive, but they fit larger/fatter/taller people in better

well that's good, I am Tall and Large or Fat, however you wanna look at it, I think you'll be happy with a Jetta, what exactly is a 3rd gen one though?

They have a couple 4motion gassers in the US market, and the conversion probably could be done, but nothing stock.
I don't mind mine much in the rain, its just the same as every other car compared to a 3-4 ton truck, it hydroplanes constantly. I've driven it in the snow a couple times, nothing too deep. The way to go is a good set of studded gnarly winter tires, but in CA your gonna be switching them all the time if you ever even get anywhere you can run them period.

Yes, Begle the 4 Motions are available as a TDI in germany.
So they are on the market.

Importing one will run you around 1000€ to Houston harbour.

With an 8 foot bed you can haul 2 fat women Seriously though I saw a internet add where the local VW dealer was offering 0% for 60 months on new Jetta Diesels, thats a good deal if you were thinkin about a new one.

when buying the latest north american tdi passat you got to rememeber to set aside 2k to fix the balsance shaft on these. they will eventually explode and take your oil pump out and your screwed. happened to me at 75k miles but i had a warranty so instead of 10k for a new engine i had to pay 100 bucks
