Default TDI Exhaust Mods

Hey guys, i have a 05 tdi and i want to do some exhaust mods for hopefully fairly cheap. I was looking into removing the two mufflers and just running a strait pipe cat-back. Would i make some decient gains by doing this? I figure being force inducted and a diesel, exhaust mods should help alot.. Has anyone done this?

Alright thanks, well then what exhaust mods do gain quite a bit of power for tdi's? I know larger piping will , which is what i was going to do, 2.5 cat back. thanks for the reply

yeah 2.5 inch strait pipe will give you the most power and performance. the factory exhuast systems are actually not very restrictive so exhuast mods dont do a whole lot. some people do 3 inch but it is almost too big for these small cars but it will work if you try hard enough. the 3 inch has to be a custom exhaust though

heres a Kerma Exhasut

2.5" MK4 TDI Stainless Cat-Back System
So the exhaust mods on tdi's dont do much? If thats the case then why would people spend on set ups like that? I'm not sayin your wrong, i just wonder why most tdi guys would spend that amount of cash on something that wont give you much power unless you have like a bigger turbo or major mods goin on... But hey thanks for the link.. what you your mods?

because a lot of people put an exhaust system on purely for the benefit of the increased sound quality and count any sort of performance/mileage increase to be an extra perk.

i have an 06 tdi mine has a straight pipe with the cat hollowed out. It didnt make the car much louder but the turbo screams now. People ask me all the time if it has a big turbo on it. It doesnt drone inside unless your goin down the highway with the windows up and the radio off. but still its not loud at all. always get complments on the sound!

The downpipe is the biggest choke point on VW's turbo exhausts. In the VW world VW is known for having pretty good exhuats systems. Hell EuroTuner slapped a Techtonics exhaust on an 09 tdi from the filter back and didn't pick up any real gain maybe 2 hp (not worth the $$$)

I will say that I'm a big fan of getting rid of the suitcase muffers. I'm running a TT 2.25" exhaust on my corrado tdi and its very quit with a borla muffler. The cat and downpipe are still stock but they are on my list of future mods...when I figure out what turbo I want to run.

Dunno i have herd some video clips of strait piped 06 and up TDi's and it really didnt impress me... Sure you could hear the turbo better but it sounded more like a ricer with a cheep coffee can muffler on it. I plan on pulling the factory cat and mufflers but going to put another muffler in its place to get rid of that tin can sound. Really dont want my 35g car sounding like a 5g ricer. Spent to much time and money on this thing for that... When i do it i want to find a new rear bumper with cutouts for duals...
