My brother and a co-worker both have straight piped '03 TDI's and those sound really good, I don't know what the newer ones sound like opened up, though. On the '03's, about all you can hear on those is a bit of turbine whistle but it's not at all comparable to the fart can ricers. Interior noise is barely raised, almost unnoticeable.
