Bought my first TDI a couple weeks ago. 1997 Passat TDI, 5 speed, 132k miles, got it from the org owners with records since it was new.

Plan is to 2.5" straight pipe it this week, do a tune and nozzles next month.

What is the change in performance/mileage like in an 02/03 TDI with basic mods like exhaust and a tune?

325,000 miles on my '01 Jetta with very few mods. Diesel Geek skid plate(essential) elephant hose mod,egr disappeared some time back but ASV intact. .216u injectors balanced and flow tested by Frank's VW TDIs,LLC in Lockwood,Mo. 55MPG ain't nothin'.
230,000 miles on the Boss' '04 Passat TDI, even fewer mods. Diesel Geek skid plate and gear driven balancer shafts(ouch)

+ Great mileage and lots of torque
- The EGR setup will plug the intake manifold full and, if you try to use cheap oil, the intercooler will fill up with oil.
