Default 4 low 4th?

My first hook of this season will be this weekend. I was running a 48re in my 04.5 common rail. The truck is somewhere between 700-800 hp. Hanging weights. 8000# class and running sts tires. 3:73 gears. Im not sure how well 4th gear will work because my sts tires usually dig dirt like no other so i want somebody else to give me their opinion.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I am running a nv4500 now.

I normally hear people Suggest 4 low 3rd gear. But it's important to NOT shift mid pull.
Even if its a seamless shift a little slack in the chain will cause you to jerk and jerking causes axle hop. And axle hop = bad pull and broken parts.
I would suggest you go to a test and tune day if at all possible and try out both and see what suits you, the higher HP of your truck may be able to turn the tires off the line in 4th. They're all unknowns!
Good luck and happy pulling

Well at least we are thinking alike. Ive been to enough pulls to see the idiots who think they can shift going down the track haha. Here in indiana we have a lot of sticky tracks but we also have a lot of sandy tracks so i guess if its a loose track ill go for 4th but otherwise ill stick with 3rd.

so its an 04.5 with a nv4500? making 7-800? if so, u probably have enough power for 4th lo, or 2nd hi.
a lot of it depends on if it is a shorter track or a long track.
if it is a short arena type with a 200ft or so track, then just go 3rd lo

Almost all tracks i pull at are 300'. I am running an aurora 5500 2.6 inducer charger so i need to keep up in the rpms a little but at the same time i only rev to 4200. My hp is an estimate. My setup last year put down just under 700 rwhp. This charger is a lot bigger. Now i can break the tires loose at pretty much any speed above 65mph in 4th gear 2wd. Its scary when the charger lights going that fast haha.

I will be pulling in winamac. Most of the big dogs wont be there so i might stand a chance. There is also an itpa pull in summitville so my odds are good at a small brush pull in winamac
The truck is a silver reg. Cab 2500 called "that's what's up"

Sounds like a great chance To see what the tranny will do...'sounds like a nice truck also... Let us know how ya do. My buddy is making his first hook in the 2.6 class so it will be interesting at hazelwood.... We have hooked twice this year with the first hook being the best at Muncie hopefully the new turbo and tuning will work out

Good luck

what size are your sts's? most people that run 4th low have 4.88's in the rear with either 33" or 35" tires
