Have you thought of putting a receiver in the rear of the trailer and getting a tow dolly?

the wheel pockets on the dolly need to pivot so the vehicle in tow can follow the tow vehicle properly on corners. usually it's one massive bolt and some washers going through the middle between the pockets.

I'll have to go find me one to look at in person. I see the pivot your talkin about but from the pics I'm not puttin it together in my head how it works in relationship to the wheels and tongue. I was a **** poor student in school cause I can't learn anything from books, I have to put somethin in my hands and see how it works before I can understand it.

I hear ya. that's my way of learning.

usually the wheel pockets are on a plate that sits on the dolly frame, there is a center pivot so the pockets can swivel to an extent during turns or track slightly if the vehicle in tow is a bit crooked. it usually sits flat on some form of hard plastic so there is no metal on metal wear. I have seen plenty of dolly's home built that do not have this and just pull straight but it would cause the vehicle to slide around corners being very hard on it, kind of like flat towing.

a 4 wheel dolly would be cool, but The other thing would be if you mount the wheel pockets above the wheels using standard trailer tires, what will the angle be for the vehicle in tow?

if you would like I can post up some pictures of one indepth tonight.

I'll take any pics or info you can put out, thanks.

I'm not real concerned with the angle for the tow dolly since it's only intended for trucks like ours that are to heavy for most other trucks to tow on a trailer, the smaller stuff would just ride on the trailer when possible. But I'm also gonna use 4 inch drop axles so it should sit about as low as it could without rubbin the roadway.

I'm gonna keep lookin at this pivot point on the dolly till I understand it all better but then I'll have to decide if it's worth the trouble for my needs. This dolly is only intended as an emergency wrecker service if it's needed. Have no desires to pull a car around the country on it. But if it turns out to make that big a difference it doesn't look hard to build it in, just some extra weight and expense for the flat plate and center pin.

I've hunted all over here locally and i can't find any tow dolly's with this pivot point in em to be able to understand the details. Since the tow dolly is only intended as an ambulance and not cross country hauls I think I'm gonna go ahead and build it without this added feature. For now anyway, that may change as time goes if I can find one in person or more info on it.

I'm also not sure that since this is gonna be a dual axle tow dolly if the pivot point would even work with the same affect. That would give me 3 axles on the ground when towing. 99% of everything hauled with this trailer would be on the bed, the dolly is just an added feature to make it more universal.

I'll still welcome any opinions, ideas or comments here though.

Look at U-Haul. The last one I rented from them had the pivot.

I walked through U-Haul and Ryder with no luck. Sweet trailers bein all galvanized like that but I couldn't find any pivot trailers. Walked through the local trailer sales dealer lot to with no luck, but keeping in mind that all his high dollar stuff is in the showroom and I was doin all this after hours so I could take pics as I found ideas I liked.
