Here is the deal the 93' dodge I just got has the Redline vacuum brake system on it, and I have very little experience with trailer brakes. So my first question is how the system works, and second could a problem with the system be causing my brakes on my truck to need me standing on the pedal to stop? (with no trailer) Is there some adjustment I could make?

 

 

I kinda left this one alone waitin for somebody that knew somethin I don't. I've never seen anything called a vacuum brake actuator in particular. Twenty years ago the trailer brake actually plumbed into the trucks brake lines and used Hydraulic to actuate the trailer brakes, and you have air brakes on the heavy trucks, never seen em on our though. But you lost me on this one. Are you sure it's not just an electronic brake that works on Electric or electric/Hydraulic brakes.

 

It has a vacuum pump on the motor (belt driven) and the hoses go from that to a valve, junction box looking thing that also has a brake line coming to it. the vacuum hoses go all the way to the rear bumper where there are quick couplers, one says control line and the other says manifold. It also has a vacuum gauge mounted on the dash and a electric brake controller that may be sererate from that whole assymbly. It seems like lots of rubbish I may never even use.

 

Sounds a lot like the old braking systems from decades ago. If it is your never gonna pull a trailer with that system installed on it. One good electronic brake controller will operate any braking system your gonna find. Electric or electric/hydraulic brake system for anyplace from single to triple axles.

Ya if that contraption is hooked into you truck brakes like that and it has a pressure leak it will kill your truck brakes.

yeah if you have an old system that actually splices into the trucks brake lines then yes i would get rid of that pronto
